GEORGE, David Bruce December 27, 1958 - July 9, 2018
It is with shock and the deepest sorrow that Dave's parents, Don and Barbara George, announce the untimely death of our beloved son in his 60th year - suddenly, in his home.
He will be sorely missed by his son Jason, and his grandchildren Aidan and Grazelyn, and by his dear sister Heather, and her children James and Jessica. He was predeceased by his other sister, Carol, in 2001.
Dave worked at Stelco for over 30 years, before retiring in 2005. Fishing was one of the joys of his life. He will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 - 9 p.m. at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME , 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown, where the Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 1 p.m. Reception to follow. Interment at a later date at St. George's Anglican Cemetery, Lowville.

(September 16, 1940 – June 28, 2018)

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Rick passed away at The Carpenter Hospice, Burlington. Loving husband and best friend of Frances (nee Critchley). Devoted father of Karyn and Craig.
He is survived by his brother Ray and sister Irene (Kelly). Predeceased by brothers Chester and Sam.
Rick was a longtime employee of Stelco and Stelwire and a graduate of McMaster University. He loved golf and the comradery he shared with his fellow golfers and friends at Hidden Lake Golf Club.
Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333, on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 from 12 noon until time of Celebration of Rick's Life at 1 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.

Much loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Elnora Meadowcroft passed away on March 12, 2018. She had a true love for life. After a long battle with declining health over the last few years, she succumbed to a chest infection.  Elnora was an active member of several organizations, including being the President of the University Women’s Club in Burlington, ON and on the executive of The Faculty Women’s Club in Vancouver.  Her favorite organization, however, was the Engineers’ Wives’ Association of Vancouver.  According to Elnora, they had the most fun. Elnora loved her family, loved to travel and loved her music.  She will be sorely missed. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross www.redcross.ca

 "Joe Fig" April 22, 1937 - December 7, 2017 Joe, beloved husband and best friend of Margaret (nee Bond), passed away peacefully at

ldlewyld Manor.
He was the devoted son of the late Salvatore "Sam" and Calogera "Carrie"; dear youngest brother of the late Gus (late Iris); Mary Mancari (late Cornelius) and the late Norm (Bev); Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Joe was respected for his work as an accountant with Stelco for many years and he was a long-time member of the ltalo-Canadian Recreation Club. He loved music, especially Old Blue Eyes, watching old movies, reading, smoking a good cigar and drinking his single malt Scotch.
Joe will be fondly remembered at a Memorial Mass at Regina Mundi Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 20 , 2017 at 10 a.m. Fellowship to follow in the Church hall. Cremation has taken place. HARTWELL, Derek James December 26, 1926 - July 17, 2017 With sadness in our hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Derek James at the Hamilton General Hospital at the age of 90. Beloved husband of the late Bethia (1995). Predeceased by his son Ian James (1976).
He will be lovingly remembered by his son Graham and his wife Paula. Cherished grandfather of Laura and Charlotte and granddog Ranger. Dear brother of Alan and Barbara of England, Janet (Ken) and Valerie (Ian) of Australia.
Derek was born and raised in London, England. He served with the British Forces in a peacekeeping role in Cyprus and Palestine. Derek immigrated to Canada with his wife Bethia in 1954. He was a dedicated machinist at Stelco for 30 years. Special thanks to everyone at Caroline Place and to Dr. Flett and the wound team. Cremation has taken place.
Friends will be received at the DONALD V. BROWN FUNERAL HOME, 36 Lake Avenue Dr., Stoney Creek on Sunday, July 23, 2017 from 12 noon until the time of Memorial Service at 1 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel.

Buyer Bedrock aims to 'make Stelco the employer of choice again in Hamilton'

If all continues smoothly this week, Bedrock Industries is scheduled to officially take over as the buyer of Stelco on Saturday, July 1.And Tuesday, a Bedrock representative made the company's first local public appearance since emerging as a would-be buyer more than a year ago.

David Cheney, Bedrock managing partner, told Hamilton and Burlington business leaders the company wants to be profitable for "all of our stakeholders," which he listed as the workers, the community, the environment and the company's shareholders.

"One of our goals is to make Stelco the employer of choice again in Hamilton," Cheney said during a live interview with McMaster University business professor Marvin Ryder at the Bay Area Economic Summit.

"This is an iconic brand with a rich history in Hamilton and the province of Ontario and we're going to restore that."

Earlier this month, an Ontario judge approved the sale of Stelco to Bedrock Industries. The previous owner, U.S. Steel, imposed a deadline of June 30 to get the deal done.

Cheney said the company is a "privately funded, industrial investor" with $500 million already committed and access to $2 billion for other deals.

Mike McQuade, president and general manager of Stelco, joined the company in the 1970s as a co-op student. Cheney said Tuesday that McQuade will stay in his current capacity after Bedrock buys the company. (Kelly Bennett/CBC)

Glen Delvecchio, P. Eng.,

Passed away peacefully in the presence of his family in his 67th year after a hard fought and courageous three-year battle against diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. This fight was lead by multi-disciplinary teams of medical professionals and support staff from both Joseph Brant and Juravinski Hospitals and his family physician, Dr. Mahdi, to whom the family is ever so grateful.

Glen was born on January 28th 1950 in Sault Ste Marie Ontario to the late Angelo (Ermo) Delvecchio and Rina Giuliani. As a young boy, he was predeceased by his brothers Gerald and baby John. Glen’s future was shaped by the Basilian Fathers who coached him in basketball and promoted a STEM education before it was popular to do so. With a background in science, technology, and mathematics, Glen pursued a degree in Engineering Materials at the University of Windsor and graduated with a gold medal in 1972. It was there that he met his match, Olga (Turchyn), who was also in the same program. They married in 1971 and Glen stayed behind in Windsor for another year to finish his degree while Olga started her career with Stelco R&D in Burlington. Glen’s thirty-year career in the steel industry began shortly after when he also joined Stelco’s R&D group to work on the development of high strength steels for pipeline applications. Half-way through, Glen made the transition to the IT department where his interest in computers from micros to mainframes developed. He was able to apply his penchant for mathematics and statistics to planning the capacity for Stelco’s mainframe computing systems, a skill set that he was able to take with him to his post-retirement career with CDS (TMX) as a capacity planner. During this time in his life, Glen took the opportunity to travel extensively with Olga whose work involved considerable travel. It was a special time to cruise the seas, dance under the stars, celebrate life, love, family, and friends, and to explore historical places that were just waiting for the perfect picture with the perfect lens.

Glen leaves behind many treasured memories of a life well lived in the hearts of those he loved dearly including his wife Olga, daughter Analisa (Ariel), sons Anthony (Mirella) and Jonathan (Natalia), granddaughter Sofia, and grandson Mark. He will be sadly missed by his brothers Gerry and Brian, his sister Doris Belanger and his brother-in-law Anthony Turchyn, along with their families.

Visitation will be held at Smith’s Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line, BURLINGTON on Wednesday May 31st, 2017 from 3:00-5:00pm and from 7:00-9:00pm, preceded by a memorial service (panachyda) at 6:30pm. The funeral service will take place at St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Cemetery, 1280 Dundas St W, OAKVILLE, at 10:00am on Thursday, June 1st, 2017 followed by a celebration of Glen’s life at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre – Tomorrow Stems from You Campaign, to the Carpenter Hospice in Burlington in appreciation for their care, and compassionate support, or to a charity of your choice.

Read: ‘Life and death matters’ at stake as U.S. Steel retirees seek benefits reinstatement

In the event an insolvency leads to winding up the pension plans, the provincial pension benefits guarantee fund would cover the shortfall for the first $12,000 of beneficiaries’ annual pensions. Anything above that would take a cut proportional to the final solvency ratio of the plans.

A 2015 economic study revealed the devastating impact a complete collapse of Stelco could have on the region. According to the report, up to 8,600 Stelco pensioners live in the city, accounting for 6.3 per cent of its residents over age 60. The average Local 1005 retiree in the city collects about $16,000 per year and would stand to lose just over $4,000 of that if the company became insolvent.

So far, no one has seen an interruption to pension benefits, although U.S. Steel did win court approval in 2015 to halt payments for post-employment benefits, such as drug and dental care, that were costing the company about $3.5 million per month. The Bedrock deal includes provisions to fund post-employment benefits through a new trust or corporate entity, but the proposal has upset Howe because he says projections suggest it will only raise enough to cover 70 per cent of the needs of Local 1005 members, compared with 100 per cent for Local 8782.

Obit McCUTCHEON, Dennis Bruce June 11, 1947 - December 18, 2016

A man of great integrity, Dennis was the best son, brother, husband, father, friend you could have. He will be very sadly missed but remain in the hearts of his wife Christine (nee Brusch), daughter Jennifer (Greg), mother Edna, sisters Leslie Jeanneret (David) and Lorrie DeGaust (Lorne), nieces and nephews, his 'little buddy' Gilligan, extended family and many friends. Beloved son of the late Fred McCutcheon and son-in-law of the late Kurt and Erna Brusch.

 A graduate of McMaster University and loyal employee of Stelco for 37 years, Dennis began his career as a student metallurgist, became an industry-wide renowned scientist in pipeline and automotive steels, then Director of Research & Development and ultimately the General Manager of Technology. His time at Stelco gave him the opportunity to see much of the world, and culminated in a love for far eastern culture and travel.

Always a competitive sportsman, early in his life Dennis was a sailor. Sailing brought him closer to his father, and together they built their first boat. Dennis only gave up sailing once he had won all the races he cared to win, and then took up golf with an equal passion for perfecting his game. Curling, movies with popcorn, photography and collecting fine scotch were among his favourite pastimes, but most of all he loved to travel with the love of his life Chris, especially cruising distant seas and oceans. Music also brought Dennis great joy, particularly 60's Rock and Roll and Motown. The soundtrack of his life was filled with some great tunes even during his last days.

Dennis will be remembered by friends and family alike for his intelligent wit and sense of humour, and Jennifer will savour every sip of his scotch collection in loving tribute to her father, friend and role model. We hope you'll also raise a glass as you remember him.

A heartfelt thank you to the medical professionals who provided such compassionate care and support to Dennis on this final leg of his journey, to our special friends Sharon and Bev who helped ease the journey, and to snow shovelers Brandon and Dustin who made sure we had a clear path.

 Cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will be held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home , 1010 Botanical Drive, BURLINGTON (905-527-0405) on January 7, 2017, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Juravinski Cancer Centre or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
