STIPANITZ, George
 George Stipanitz in his 92nd year passed away on October 22, 2013. Dearly loved by wife Gertrude and sons, Georgie ('45), Paul ('08) (Rose) and Nick (Sandra). George was born in Bratislava in the former Czechoslovakia where he studied chemical engineering before moving to Hamilton with his wife 70 years ago. A husband, devoted and always close to his wife. A father, admired by his sons, who inspired them to achieve. He will be remembered fondly by those lives he touched, co-workers, friends and neighbours. A special thanks to Shalom Village who provided a peaceful setting for his departure with close family at his side to see him on. A memorial mass will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, November 1st at Canadian Martyrs Parish, 38 Emerson Street, Hamilton followed by a 12:30 p.m. reception lunch at  Marlatt Funeral Home , 195 King Street West, Dundas. In lieu of flowers, consider giving to George's favourite charity, The Good Sheppard.

RIBAUDO, Antonio (Tony)

Tony was an employee of Canadian Engineering who spent considerable time working for R&D, mostly in the pilot plant area.
Visitation will be held at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL, 43 Barton Street East (near James) on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Vigil Prayers Friday at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at Canadian Martyrs Parish on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 9 a.m. Entombment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Burlington.

George died this week and his funeral is set for Friday, Nov. 1.

The reception will be held at 12:30 at the Marlatt Funeral Home in Dundas. The funeral service will take place earlier at 11:30am in St. Martyrs Catholic Church.

His obit will appear in the Hamilton Spectator tomorrow. ( Please check, just in case I failed to record the info correctly.)

Motorcycle Accident

Hi Dan:

I don't have any e-mail addresses for the R&D breakfast club.  They may or may not know that Hank Averink was in a motorcycle accident in late July just north of Guelph.  He suffered a broken pelvis, several broken ribs, a punctured lung and head injuries.  He has been transferred from the Hamilton General to Grimsby.  No doubt the road to recovery and rehab will be long.

Hello Rick,

This is from Beryl Batt, wife of Bob Batt, who I know you haven't seen for a long time, but I thought I would give you an update on what has been happening in the past few months.

Bob was moved into Long Term Care last November, he has been suffering from Parkinson's disease for about three years, and although we had people coming to the house to help him for about a year they decided that it was time for Long Term Care.  He went into Burloak LTC, which was only a few minutes away from where we lived, and he seems to be quite comfortable in there. Unfortunately he does not talk very much, and sleeps most of the time, but seems happy enough.

I have now sold the house where we lived for 44 years, (since Bob was transferred to Stleco R & D) and have moved into Heritage Place Retirement Home, in Burlington, at Upper Middle Road and Walker's Line, so it is still only about a 15 minute drive away.  The closing date on the sale was yesterday, although I moved in here a couple of weeks ago.

The e-mail address has remained the same.

1982 Names and faces

Stelco – First Assignment

I applied for a job at Stelco in February, 1968. I came to my first interview on a very snowy day– so snowy that the R&D centre was shut down right after I got there. But not to worry they said, come back tomorrow. So I slogged off and got on the Burlington to Toronto bus. But things were not to be so simple. On Lakeshore Boulevard, the bus driver ran into a butcher’s truck, killing the truck driver, injuring the bus driver and sending dead chickens all over the road. After much delay, I finally got back to my brother’s place in Toronto.

Next day was much better. In fact, Ray Meadowcroft said that having enough nerve to come back for an interview after the terrible events the previous day, I must be able to handle the job. In any case, I was hired and assigned to the Thermics section.

Final Memoir (Part 1)

“From the Beginning” has been modified thanks to the efforts of: Rick Grigg, Les McLean, Harold Cipywnyk, John Hood, and John Prikryl.  Collectivly, they found 19 typos, and factual and grammar errors.
I made the changes and encourage by this, I decided to have another go at editing, editing with a fine-tooth comb.  As I result I found many more problems: clumsy wording and errors in grammar. Now I’m pleased with the end product and have posted it (see below).

U of A’s Indira Samarasekera: Canada’s R&D lag costs us

Indira Samarasekera is a lady of steel, in more ways than one. In 1974, she became the first female mechanical engineer in her native Sri Lanka, then went on to do a master’s in materials engineering in California and a PhD at the University of British Columbia. Using mathematical models to find defects in steel led her to consulting gigs with steel makers around the globe and, in 2000, the role of vice-president of research at UBC. Five years later, the University of Alberta lured her to Edmonton. Since taking over as president, Dr. Samarasekera has focused relentlessly on research and development, raising $1.4-billion in funding for world-class research facilities like the National Institute for Nanotechnology and the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology, and enticing world-renowned researchers to Edmonton, a town better known for its massive mall than its elite academics. We talked to Dr. Samarasekera about how to spur research and innovation in her adopted country.

From the Beginning -- Stelco R&D

Preface

In a sense this is a draft memoir; it’s unfinished. However, I decided to release it before I go too far down the road to senility, which my grandmothers did when they were in their 80s. I’m 82.

At the Feb 2013 breakfast meeting of R&D Retirees, Rick Grigg asked me where the file on my memories of the early years at Stelco is. I had posted a couple of Chapters about five years ago, but later deleted the pdf file. Now my health has improved (fractured lumbar is slowly mending) and I can again write, adding more memories to my initial effort.

So far, what I have been able to put on paper only covers the period from 1954 to about 1978. However, some of the narrative creeps well into the 80s. But, much of what happened behind the scenes, e.g., at Stelco Head Office, is not covered. ....

Our good wishes go out to Joe Figliola

Hi Jock:
I have been in touch with Joe's wife, Margaret, twice. The first time about 10 days ago and I told her about your son Ken and she passed the news on to joe. He has expressed regrets via Margaret as does she also.
As far as Joe is concerned he had a stroke at the end of May last year which affected his left side. On October 1st he was transferred to Idlewyld and is under their care now. He walks with a walker and as a result of good and bad days some dementia shows through.
Also the "parkinson" does cause concern but he is able to eat all his meals. Margaret takes fruit in to him and is in there twice a day.
Of course Joe wonders when he can go home but Margaret puts him off. She feels that is really not an option. Also she says, and we can believe it, that he is not the Joe that we all knew.

To be honest it took a few minutes with some of the names but because so many were of the early gang they all came back eventually. Has Nick been able to fight his way back a bit?.
A little update: I left R&D in 1975 to join Michel Hone in Mtl to form a satellite R&D east. We lived in Mont St. Hilaire SE of Mtl. Adrianna was 2 1/2 and Alison was 6 months. During our stay 'til 1986 I had 7 different jobs starting with R&D then through a few mills as Met and QC and production jobs as GF Pipe Mill and GF Steelmaking and ended as Service Met for Jack Presho in the east. Arlene worked at a number of jobs in computer science (including giving courses in French) and eventually was a prof at a Community college. Our son Matthew was born in 1977. All three of our kids went to French Primary school..
We moved to Windsor as Sen Service Met with the Automotive Sales office. Arlene instructed at U of Windsor and quickly became bored and looked around for some new challenge. At age 42 she announced she thought she would like to go to Law school. To a mediocre student at best that sounded ludicrous and I said so.... so she promptly enrolled.
I loved the action in Detroit and the small group working out of the Windsor office. When a headhunter called late in 1988 with an offer to work in an Eastern On Rodmill I happily said " No. I'm very happy where I am thank you" and hung up. I told Arlene and she said that she might benefit from finishing law school in Ottawa with job opportunities etc. So I called back to say I was only kidding when I said to stick your job.
We moved in 1989 and there was lots of low hanging fruit as a service met and QA guy to help Ivaco get away from the nail rod mentality. I became Rodmill Super in 1993 and worked toward a major revamp of the RM in 3 phases from 1995 -99. Then I created a job called Manager of Product Performance that sort of dabbled from Production through QA and Service Met and I quite enjoyed that for a few years.

Ivaco got into financial trouble in 2003 and we were bought by Heico out of Chicago. They decided that I should actually work for pay and I became Manager of Operations. The strike from Sept. 2005 to Jan 2006 was all about DB vs DC pensions and we were asked to run the RM with staff. We did it and produced 72,000 tons of great quality rod and came together as a team like few others. Chicago was so impressed they suggested we move to 2 12hr shifts using outside help. Thank goodness the Union folded just as my crew were going to our first night shift.
Mid 2006 I named one fellow to take over production and another to cover my QA side (yes I know of foxes and chicken coops) and watched them grow into much better managers than I ever was and I retired on my 65th B'day.
While I was dabbling with steel, Arlene graduated and fast tracked to partner (at age 45 or so) in Ottawa then quit when our first gr. child was due and work as in house council and retired with me. She is very involved with a charity that educates girls in Tanzania called Project Tembo and has traveled to Africa 10/11 times over the last 5/6 yrs. In 2008 I was there for a total of 3 months building stuff for the project.
I would love to be part of the R&D conversation.
